Stranger Things 2: Part 1: Some of My Thoughts on Season one- and Theories for Season 2 (Spoilers)

Hello world! I am now going to pause our usual programming to talk about how EXTREMELY EXCITED I am that Stranger Things 2 will be coming out tomorrow (in less than 12 hours as I am writing this).

I realize how nerdy this is- and I apologize to any of you who were expecting cool castles and awesome seaside villages- but I have to hit the pause button on all that for a few moments because I am just about as excited as I am on Christmas Eve- maybe more so even!

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity: watching Stranger Things 2 for the first time- so I’m going to take this wonderful occurrence and use it as best I can- after watching each individual episode of Stranger Things 2 I will write my thoughts and post them to Digital Munchies so I can document this experience for myself- and all of you who are interested.

Now- I am about to break down my thoughts on Stranger Things 2- and doing so will require me to discuss the original season of Stranger Things- so- spoilers. You have been warned.

About a year ago I watched Stranger Things through for a second time- and at that point I came up with some predictions- they went as follows:

  • Eleven would return.
  • They would have more awesome 80’s music.
  • They would develop Steve’s character.
  • They would focus more on the characters than the Upside Down.
  • They wouldn’t ruin it.

I’ve just finished re-watching Stranger Things again with my family- and I am so crazy excited about the next season- we’re left off seeing many narrative strings tied nicely into bows and although a large number of the story’s many subplots and plot points were resolved- there are a few which were either left unfinished or just plain added in in the last episode that I would like to discuss with you. For tonight I will only mention one though:

We see Hopper leave Eggos in a box in the woods- suggesting that perhaps not only had Eleven returned- but she and Hopper were somehow in contact- the theory of Eleven’s return was confirmed in trailers, so we at least know she’s back- as for if she and Hop are in direct contact- well- I guess that remains to be seen.  As it turns out- one of my predictions has already been proven true- Eleven did return- and this makes me want to revise my list a bit. Every time one prediction is confirmed or proven false I will add a new one- or- well- try.

  • Eleven would return. -Confirmed!-
  • They would have more awesome 80’s music.
    • This one seems so obvious to me that is practically doesn’t deserve to be on this list- especially because it is more a comment on the style of Stranger Things than the plot of Stranger Things 2- but it was still a prediction so I feel it can stay.
  • They would develop Steve’s character.
    • This one comes from my belief that Steve could have had more time to grow- with every re-watching I find myself thinking of Steve as a better and better person- and now I look forward greatly to his development in Stranger Things 2. I think I can safely expand my theory to that they will develop many of the supporting characters more- although I hate to call them that. All of the characters in Stranger Things feel so alive and vibrant that I could call them all main characters. One of the greatest shows ever.
  • They would focus more on the characters than the Upside Down.
    • This one makes me think a bit- I kind of wonder what got into my head when I theorized this- I suppose it is possible- but considering the trailers I’m fairly sure the upside down will play a pretty big role. I’ll watch a few episodes before I judge though- but I don’t have a lot of hope for this one.
  • They wouldn’t ruin it.
    • I trust the Duffer brothers enough to think this one is just about confirmed- but we’ll wait and see- anything could happen. I am firmly in the belief that Stranger Things 2 will still be one of the best things I’ll ever watch though.

Now- as one of my theories was confirmed I need a new one… as it stands my mind is blank- tomorrow morning I will think and try to develop a new idea- maybe I will and some new thoughts after I watch the first episode of Stranger Things 2 (writing that I almost had chills- I am SO EXCITED).

Now- another thing I will be doing is keeping a list of my favorite characters- this is the list now:

  1. Dustin
  • Dustin is just such a funny and clever character- Gaten Matarazzo does an expert job of playing him- and as with all the Stranger Things actors- I wish I could get the chance to meet him- allow with the rest of the gang- the actors for the kids in Stranger Things have amazing talent- and to get to talk with them would be fantastic.
  1. Hopper
  • Hopper is one of those characters who I can’t really call perfectly good- but most certainly has the right intentions. He smokes- drinks- and I’m sure has many other bad habits- not to mention that fact that for a police officer- he breaks the law a lot- but he is a really deep character as you learn more and more about him- and for some reason I find David Harbour’s delivery of his lines completely hilarious. An amazing character.
  1. Steve
  • Steve is such an interesting character- and as I said before- the more times I watch Stranger Things the more I consider him a good one too- I hope he proves to be more than half decent in Stranger Things 2-I would hate to see his development regress backwards after just a year- that would be tragic… I know he isn’t perfect- which is exactly the reason I want him to do better- I hope to see Steve developed into the kind character throughout season two.

Now there are most certainly other characters who I greatly appreciate- obviously Eleven is awesome but she isn’t quite my favorite- although- side note- Millie Bobby Brown didn’t get a lot of lines in Stranger Things 1- so I’m hoping to see more development of her character as the story progresses- I’m sure she could definitely break my top three if her character got written out a bit more. There were two other characters who I wanted to put on the list- but as they are only minor characters it felt wrong: Holly (Mike and Nancy’s little sister), and Mike and Nancy’s dad. I wanted to put them on the list because whenever they were in a scene it was guaranteed to make me laugh- but they have such relatively small rolls in the story that it felt wrong to include them.

The truth is- just about every character in Stranger Things is amazing- so when it comes to picking favorites they are all winners. Even as I consider my choices I wonder if Nancy should be on the list- but for now I am willing to leave it as it stands. I will be updating my opinions on characters as they change- and in a similar way I will be seeing how many of my predictions ring true.

For now I will leave you all though- because it is 11:20 and I still have some stuff to do before bed- so I need to get this posted!

Thank you for your interest- I hope all of you are as excited for Stranger Things 2 as I am! Goodnight!
